Industry

This section is straightfoward PROVIDED you learn your case studies properly !! We use the Sambre Meuse so be sure you know the reasons for industry locating there in the first place, subsequently declining and then new industry being attracted there.

This is a news report about Charleroi - I can't get it to play in school but worth trying at home

http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid_8300000/newsid_8307800/8307843.stm?bw=bb&mp=wm&news=1&nol_storyid=8307843&bbcws=1

O.S. mapwork is a straightforward type of industry question - be sure to remember all the usual mapwork hints, accurate grid references, proper use of the key. There has not been one for a few years ensure you are confident about these types of questions.

Remind me to show you the Sambre Meuse Smart book of photos.

Coasts and limestone - previous posts

Do not forget to look at previous posts on these topics - use the contents list at the bottom right of the main page. there are lots of photos of Durdle Door and Old Harry and his wife ! Follow the links to the excellent BBC web sites - they are well worth looking at as Geography teachers have been involved in writing the material.

Mud slides

There have been terrible mud slides in Messina in Sicily in the last few days the link below takes you to the BBC web site. We study this as part of our mass movement work at teh end fo teh lithosphere section of work.

The second and third links are to articles which refer to the role of man in deforestation and developing buildings on the slopes

Glaciation

Well as we are just about to start the lithosphere section of the work some photos for you to see from our summer geography teacher's visit to Iceland. ( Wonderful place if you get the chance to go !).

Some glaciation revision - think about how glaciers form. Go over in your head the inputs, processes and outputs of a glacial system. Can you repeat our famous 12 points re the formation of a corrie ? Kung fu glaciation might help - get active ! Can you draw diagrams to explain the formation of 3 erosive and 3 depositional features ?
On the third picture look for the people to give you an idea of scale - some glaciers are HUGE !

Revision

A great first revision lesson today - well done everyone. I hope that gives you a little bit more confidence on limestone landscapes. Just remembering 6 key words per feature should be a good help. Don't forget to include names of places and processes e.g. chemical weathering / solution etc. Good to have some of you handing in work to be marked too - I will mark practice questions for you if you would like me to.

Don't forget the excellent BBC Scotland limestone site

To refresh your memory also check out the learning zone video clips too - there are LOTS of them

- all worth looking over again for revision - clips from some of the programmes I have shown you - make good use of them !!

Atmosphere revision on Thursday - look over your notes and think of any points you want me to clarify.

Second homes in rural areas

An interesting article on the Today programme this morning on Radio 4 about local people being unable to afford housing in their local areas. The case study is of the village of Exford on Exmoor. Interesting comments from local people - worth listening to.

Edinburgh revision

The following links will be helpful when revising this (your favourite topic !)

A powerpoint written specifically for higher unfortunately no author is given for me to credit here but it contains some excellent slides

rhsgeography.wikispaces.com/file/view/Higher+Urban+Edinburgh+REVISION+CBD+and+INNER.ppt

if the link does not work type edinburgh changes in CBD into google and it is the second result

Also the bitesize revision site most of you are familiar with already.
www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/bitesize/higher/geography/human/urban3_rev.shtml

Look carefully at the past questions as well.

Development and Health

As requested some more ideas about case study examples you could use in relation to PHC on paper 2 in the Development and Health question 6.

Riders for Health is the motorbike charity we have spoken about - click on the photo above to follow the link to their web site for some examples

Each programme is run by nationals of the country concerned, which builds local capacity, creates skilled employment and embeds a culture of preventive maintenance into the communities.

Riders now employs 230 people, running more than 1,274 vehicles and keeping health and community workers from a variety of organisations ‘on the road’ – from ministries of health to small community groups.

'Before [we received a vehicle under the Riders’ TRM system] we could not rely on the ambulance to get to remote areas. We would not go because we could be afraid that we could not get back. And the people would not meet us at the outreach clinic…they would not trust that we could be there.' Community nurse, the Gambia.

'We have had vehicles and motorcycles before. The difference is that now they are maintained properly by Riders for Health. Because I have a reliable motorcycle I can cover a large area and prevent the spread of disease. That’s how lives are saved.’ Philemon Simanyo, environmental health technician, Zimbabwe.
Well worth looking at for some relevant and up to date examples.
